More than 25 years ago, California’s table grape growers established a health research grant program to help discover how and why grapes are beneficial to health. This ongoing research aims to further understand how table grapes support multiple areas of human health, including the heart, brain, gastrointestinal, skin, immune, joint, eyes, and certain cancers. Call for Letters of Intent: September 17 – October 28, 2025. Each fall, Letters of Intent are solicited from the research community. Selected finalists are invited to submit full proposals, which are then rigorously reviewed by an advisory panel of distinguished scientists.

Funded research projects use a freeze-dried powder form of California table grapes to maintain consistent and replicable research methods. The use of this powder encourages uniformity across focus areas and allows the work to continue outside of California’s harvest season, which runs May into December. Researchers may also access a grape powder placebo.

Researchers intending to submit a Letter of Intent to the commission are encouraged to review the documents below for detailed information regarding submission guidelines.

Letters of Intent are due to the commission no later than Tuesday, October 28, 2025 by 5 p.m. PST.

ABOUT California TABLE GRAPES

Californians have been cultivating grapes for more than two centuries. Today, 99 percent of U.S. table grapes are produced in California's warm, dry climate that is ideal for grape growing. With more than 80 grape varieties grown, California grapes come in three colors—green, red, and black—and are in season from May through January.
